Alexandria Coon is an eeyou/eenou iskuwaau from Mistissini. She has passion in sewing, beading and crochet. Her artwork is inspired by Cree artists who came before her. She started picking up sewing/beading half way through college because she felt more connected to Cree Culture through art. She has always driven to learn different techniques and style of sewing/beading from other women and gookum who sews. She is well-known with Ribbon skirts/shirts and winter parkas. However, She loves serving her community with her artwork by creating and sharing her knowledge to youth.
She learned through other Cree women who has been sewing for many years. Some of her work was self taught and by observations from other artists. Most of all, she was inspired by Cree woman who she known for a long time to pick up sewing/beading as a way of reconnecting and relearning.
She finds inspiration through her culture and the colours of the land. However, I do obtain inspiration from other artists and she makes sure to quote it.
No formal training, mostly self-taught.
She recently started painting using acrylic paint with canvas. She was inspired by tiktok painter where she paints nature. For a person who loves being in the bush, she wanted to learn how to paint nature because it is therapeutic to her
