Flora Weistche

Traditional & Contemporary:

Location: Waskaganish

Short description of your art.

My father's last harvested caribou hide inspired the rebirth of my beading practice - one I had begun at the young age of three and yet laid to rest for some twenty years. I was moved to threading coloured beads to share the message gifted to me by my late grandmother Helen Weistche. By way of beading, I braid relations crossing generations reaching toward plant, animal and human relatives alike.

Where did you learn your art?

By looking, listening and learning from my family of artisans, especially my mother and the late Gerti Murdoch.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

My inspiration to bead an entire hide was from a dream visit of my late Grandmother Helen Weistche. Also, I always admire Christi Belcourt's artwork.

Have you received any formal training?

I started at a young age by watching my mother bead and sew moccasins, gloves, slippers, etc for people who requested them.

What other art forms do you practice?

I paint as a hobby.

Have you ever received any awards or special recognition?

Nominated for the rising star award.

Do you sell your work? If so, How?

Yes, for those who are interested in the prints.

Has your art work ever been mentioned in any media?

CBC and the Nation.

Please provide any information on your buyers.
